There’s something about this time of year, the light gets softer, the air finally lets up a little, and everyone seems just a touch more relaxed than they were in July.
Here in Jacksonville, we don’t get the dramatic leaf-changing fall you see further north, and I think that trips people up. You don’t need a forest full of orange leaves to get a beautiful fall family photo. You need good light, a thoughtful color palette, and a little intention and that’s exactly what I want to walk you through here.

Why is fall the best time for family photos?
Because the light gets gentler, the heat finally backs off, and everyone, kids included, is just more comfortable being outside for an hour. Golden hour stretches longer, the humidity drops, and you can actually wear real outfits without sweating through them five minutes in.
It’s also just emotionally the season people want to remember. Pumpkin patches, cooler mornings, the start of the holidays creeping in, fall family photos end up doing double duty as your holiday card and your “this was us” snapshot for the year.

Golden Hour at the Beach: Even in fall, Jacksonville beaches are unbeatable for that warm, glowy light. Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach in particular are gorgeous in October and November once the crowds thin out.
Cozy In-Home Sessions: Think soft blankets, a cup of something warm, kids in pajamas on a Saturday morning. These feel incredibly personal and age beautifully, you’ll love these more in ten years than almost anything else. – no, i dont do in home sessions like this
Historic Neighborhood Walks: Avondale, Riverside, and San Marco all have gorgeous architecture and tree-lined streets that photograph beautifully in fall’s softer light, even without changing leaves.
Multi-Generational Gatherings: Fall, with the holidays approaching, is a natural time to pull grandparents and extended family into one session. These are the photos people treasure most.

Wondering what to wear for fall family photos? Lean into warm, grounded tones, terracotta, deep olive, mustard, rust, cream, and denim all work beautifully together without looking matchy. Layering pieces (a light cardigan, a flannel, a denim jacket) add texture and make the whole group feel cohesive even when no two outfits are identical.
A few things I always tell my clients:
- Coordinate, don’t match — pull everyone from the same color family instead of putting them in identical outfits
- Mix textures — knits, denim, and soft cottons photograph beautifully together
- Skip busy logos or characters, they’ll date the photos fast
- Layer where you can — fall is the one season in Florida where you can actually get away with it

5. When to Book Your Fall Session
When should I book fall family photos? As early as you can. Fall is, hands down, my busiest season, between the better weather and everyone wanting holiday card photos, good dates go fast.
I always tell families to reach out by late summer (July or August) if you want your pick of October or November dates. If you’re flexible and book last minute, you can sometimes still find a spot, but I wouldn’t count on it.

Do we need actual fall foliage for fall family photos to look good?
Not at all. Jacksonville doesn’t get dramatic leaf color, and that’s okay, warm light, a thoughtful color palette, and the right location do all the work. Some of my favorite fall sessions have zero orange leaves in them.

Golden hour, the hour or so before sunset, is my favorite. The light is warm, soft, and forgiving, and it photographs beautifully against Jacksonville beaches and parks alike.

Absolutely, and fall is actually one of the best times to do it. With the holidays approaching, it’s a natural moment to bring everyone together.
What if it’s still hot out in early fall?
Florida fall can run warm well into October. I usually recommend leaning toward late October or November if heat and humidity are a concern, or sticking to early morning or evening sessions either way.
How do we make our fall photos feel different from last year’s?
Try changing your location, your color palette, or your session style. If you did a posed studio session last year, try an in-home or beach session this year, small changes make a big difference in how your gallery feels over time.
