If you’ve typed “infant photography near me” into Google. while cradling your newborn, you’ve come to the right place! The first weeks and months of your baby’s life pass faster than you ever imagined, and professional photographs are the one way to freeze these precious moments forever.

I am Laura, a Jacksonville newborn and infant photographer based right here in Northeast Florida, and I have been photographing babies and families across Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, Atlantic Beach, and the surrounding areas for over fifteen years.

This guide covers everything you need to know about infant photography including, the age range, session types, how to prepare, what it costs here in Jacksonville, and how to find a photographer who is genuinely the right fit for your family.

Let’s get into it!

Quick note: If you are here because you are also thinking about newborn photos and already have a baby on the way, you can check out my newborn photography sessions here

What Is Infant Photography?

A mom and dad stand holding their newborn as their three toddler daughters in dresses smile around them in a studio after visiting the Jacksonville tongue tie center

Infant photography covers the full first year of a baby’s life, from the first hours after birth all the way through their first birthday. It includes newborn sessions, fresh 48 hospital sessions, and milestone sessions at three months, six months, and one year. It is its own specialty, completely different from general portrait or family photography.

I say this because it genuinely matters when you are searching for baby photos near you: a photographer who does beautiful family sessions in the park is not necessarily trained to safely pose a seven-day-old newborn.

Working with newborns requires hands-on safety training, an understanding of how babies breathe and move in different positions, and the patience to let a session unfold on the baby’s schedule, not yours.

When you are looking for infant photography in Jacksonville, you want someone who photographs babies regularly, not occasionally. The difference shows up in the safety, the images, and the experience you have in the studio.

Why invest in professional infant photography over DIY?

Professional lighting brings out that soft, creamy newborn skin in a way no phone camera can replicate. Proper posing technique creates those iconic curled-up looks that stop you in your tracks when you see them. And most importantly, you deserve to be in the photos. Not holding the camera, not managing the setup. In the frame with your baby, during one of the most significant moments of your life.

That is what I am here for!

The Age Windows For Infant Photography

When is the best time to photograph a newborn? The ideal window for a posed newborn session is days five through fourteen of life, when babies still curl naturally into the fetal position, sleep deeply, and can be gently posed into the wrapped, tucked looks that define classic newborn photography.

After two weeks, babies become more alert, their startle reflexes strengthen, and deep posing becomes significantly harder. Timing matters more in infant photography than almost any other type of session, and this is the part I go over with every single family who reaches out to me.

Days 5–14: The Newborn Sweet Spot

This is the golden window. In the first two weeks, babies sleep the way only newborns sleep, deeply, completely, in a way that makes those beautiful curled poses possible. The wrapped-up, tucked-in, potato-sack images that make people cry? Those require a sleepy, brand-new baby.

My biggest piece of advice: book your newborn session during your second trimester. Don’t wait until after your baby arrives. I hold your spot with a retainer and we confirm the session date once you have delivered. Jacksonville’s best newborn photographers fill six to eight weeks out, sometimes more.

4 Months: The Smile Session

Four months is one of my absolute favorite ages to photograph. Real social smiles. Eye contact. The first real glimpses of who this baby is becoming. This is a beautiful option for families who missed the newborn window, or for families who want to capture that sweet early-smiling stage before it changes.

6-8 Months: Sitting Up and Full of Personality

Six-eight months is genuinely one of the most joyful sessions I do. Babies are starting to sit, laughing out loud, reaching for things, and showing off a personality that has been quietly building since day one. Outdoor golden-hour sessions here in Jacksonville work beautifully at this age, especially in the fall and winter months.

First Birthday: The Cake Smash

Is there a more purely joyful session than a cake smash? Baby gets a decorated cake, a festive backdrop, and full permission to make the most glorious mess possible. These sessions are pure happiness and they fill up fast — book several months out, especially in the spring and fall.

Types of Infant Photography Sessions in Jacksonville

What are the different types of infant photography sessions? The main types of infant photography sessions are posed studio newborn sessions, lifestyle newborn sessions, outdoor milestone sessions, and studio milestone sessions. Each has a different look and feel, and the right choice depends on your baby’s age, your personal style, and the aesthetic you are drawn to.

When you start searching for a newborn photographer near me in Jacksonville, you will find photographers offering different styles. Here is what each one looks like so you can make the right call.

Posed Studio Newborn Sessions

This is the classic look most people picture, baby wrapped in soft textures, nestled in a little bucket or on a bed of fluffy blankets, curled into those dreamy, tucked positions with wraps and headbands and heirloom-quality props. Sessions are done in my climate-controlled studio so baby stays warm and comfortable throughout.

These sessions run two to four hours, because I am never in a rush. Babies need feeding breaks, soothing time, and patience. Getting a deeply sleeping baby into a beautiful pose takes time, and that time is built into every session.

Lifestyle Newborn Sessions

Lifestyle sessions happen in your home and feel completely different from studio work. There is no posing a baby into a basket, it is documentary-style photography that captures you actually living in those early days. Nursing in the glider you spent three weeks researching. Baby sleeping in the bassinet. Siblings sneaking in for a closer look. These sessions have a natural, editorial quality that a lot of families are drawn to right now.

Outdoor Milestone Sessions

Jacksonville’s climate is genuinely beautiful for outdoor baby photography, mild winters, golden-hour light that stretches long into the evening, and access to some of the most stunning coastal and park settings in Northeast Florida. Outdoor sessions work best for babies three months and older who have some neck and head control.

Studio Milestone Sessions

Consistent studio milestone sessions at three months, six months, and one year allow you to build a collection of images that tells the complete story of your baby’s entire first year. I offer a first-year package that bundles these sessions together at a better investment, and the continuity of having them done in the same space is something families really love when they look back at the full collection.

What Happens During a Newborn Session

What should I expect during an infant photography session? A newborn studio session runs two to four hours and includes feeding breaks, soothing time, and transitions between poses and setups. A good infant photographer will never rush the process, the session moves on the baby’s schedule, not a fixed timeline. You should leave feeling calm, cared for, and confident the images are exactly what you hoped for.

Before You Arrive

I send every family a detailed prep guide before their session. I want you walking through my studio door feeling calm and ready, not scrambling.

For newborn sessions: keep your home warm in the days before — around 75 to 78°F — and feed your baby as close to your departure time as possible. A full, drowsy baby is exactly what we are working toward.

During the Session

The session itself moves on the baby’s terms. I use white noise, controlled temperature, and gentle soothing techniques throughout. I build in feeding breaks naturally, and I will never rush a transition. If your baby needs twenty minutes of swaying to reach a deep enough sleep for the next pose, that is exactly what we do.

Safety is the thing I care about most. I will never force a pose, and I will never put a baby in a position that feels uncomfortable or unsafe. Everything is guided, patient, and unhurried.

After the Session

Depending on your package, your finished gallery will be delivered within two to four weeks through a private online portal. You can view, download, and order professional prints directly through the gallery. I do not hand over a raw library of unedited images — every photo in your gallery has already been carefully selected and fully edited, so what you receive is already the best of your session.

How to Prepare for Your Baby’s Session

How do I prepare my baby for an infant photography session? For newborn sessions, the most important thing is arriving with a recently fed, warm, sleepy baby. For older infants, plan the session around their natural happy window (typically mid-morning after the first nap) and bring a favorite toy or comfort item.

This is where I see a lot of families get tripped up, not on the photography itself but on the preparation. Here is what makes the biggest difference.

For Newborns (0–14 Days)

  • Feed right before you leave home. A full baby is a sleepy baby.
  • Pack an extra outfit for yourself too. Spit-up does not care about your nice top.

For Milestone Sessions (3–12 Months)

  • Schedule the session around your baby’s natural happy window, typically mid-morning after that first nap.
  • Bring a favorite toy or something that reliably makes them smile.

For You, the Parent

Eat something before you come. Drink water. Take a breath. A three-hour session on new-parent fumes requires some self-care on the front end.

And please, let go of the idea of perfection. The photos I love most, the ones that make parents cry when they see their gallery for the first time, are almost never the most perfectly posed ones. They are the real ones. Trust the process.

Indoor Studio vs. Outdoor: How to Decide

A smiling new mother gazes down to her newborn in her hands while sitting on a white couch after visiting the Jacksonville tongue tie center

Should I choose a studio or outdoor infant photography session? Studio sessions offer controlled temperature, consistent lighting, and access to a full prop and wardrobe collection, ideal for newborns and families who want a timeless, heirloom aesthetic. Outdoor sessions offer Jacksonville’s natural landscapes, golden-hour light, and a sense of movement and space, ideal for babies three months and older and families who love a lifestyle feel.

One of the great things about photographing babies in Jacksonville is that you genuinely have both options available, and both are beautiful. Here is how I help families decide.

Choose the Studio When:

  • Your baby is a newborn (always, for temperature control and safety)
  • You are shooting in July or August, Jacksonville summer heat is genuinely brutal for infants outdoors
  • You want a timeless, classic, heirloom look that will never feel dated
  • Florida’s unpredictable afternoon storms feel too risky for outdoor scheduling

Choose Outdoors When:

  • You are shooting between October and March, when Jacksonville’s climate is genuinely perfect
  • Your baby is three months or older and has some head and neck control
  • You want natural landscapes, movement, and golden-hour light as part of your story
  • You have a location that is personally meaningful to you as a family

What to Wear for Your Infant Session

a clothing rack full of soft color maternity dresses

What should I wear to an infant photography session? For newborn sessions where parents appear in the images, choose soft neutrals, cream, ivory, blush, sage, warm gray, and avoid bold patterns or large logos. For milestone sessions, baby’s outfit takes center stage. Always bring a backup outfit for baby.

For Newborn Sessions

Parents often appear in newborn sessions, and these images become some of the most treasured in the entire gallery. When choosing what to wear:

  • Soft neutrals: cream, ivory, blush, sage, dusty mauve, warm gray
  • Avoid bold patterns and large logos — they pull focus from your baby’s face
  • Wear something comfortable enough to sit cross-legged on the floor in
  • Coordinate instead of matching — matching looks dated, coordinated tones look timeless

For Milestone Sessions

Baby’s outfit is the star. I love simple rompers and soft onesies for a clean look, knitwear and linen textures for studio sessions, and earthy warm tones for outdoor golden-hour sessions. Always bring a backup outfit.

One of the perks of my full-service photography experience is that client’s get acces to my client closet! Choose from a curated collection of gowns and dresses completely free of charge! The client closet is available for all stages of motherhood.

What Does Infant Photography Cost in Jacksonville?

A mom leans down to kiss the head of her sleeping newborn in dad's arms

How much does infant photography cost in Jacksonville? Infant photography pricing in Jacksonville typically ranges from $250 to $900 depending on the session type, photographer experience, and what is included. Newborn studio sessions run $400 to $900, milestone sessions run $250 to $500, and first-year packages that bundle multiple sessions together typically range from $900 to $1,800.

*Pricing varies by photographer, this table is just a range.

What Affects the Price

Experience level, studio overhead, what is included in the package (digital files only versus products and prints), and the time a photographer puts into post-session editing and client care all factor into the price you see.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

What should I ask an infant photographer before booking? Before booking an infant photographer in Jacksonville, ask how many years they have specifically been photographing newborns, what safety training they have completed, how they handle posing like the froggy pose, what their rescheduling policy is for early deliveries, how many images you will receive, and whether you can see a complete client gallery rather than just highlights.

Not every photographer who appears in “newborn photographer Jacksonville FL” search results has the same experience level. These are the questions that matter.

On Safety and Experience:

  • How long have you specifically been photographing newborns and infants?
  • Have you completed any formal newborn posing safety training?
  • How do you handle composite poses like the froggy pose?

On the Session Itself:

  • What happens if my baby is sick and we need to reschedule?
  • What is your policy if I deliver early or late?
  • How long from session day to receiving my gallery?

On Your Deliverables:

  • How many edited images will I receive?
  • Do I receive high-resolution files?
  • Do you offer professional print products?

On Fit:

  • Can I see a complete gallery from a recent session, not just highlight images?
  • How would you describe your editing style?

Ready to Book Your Jacksonville Infant Session?

This season is short. The sleepy newborn stage will be gone before you believe it. The way your baby smells, the weight of them on your chest, the way they curl their fist around your finger, that is worth preserving while it is happening.

I would love to photograph your family. Reach out through my contact page and let’s start planning. Tell me your due date, where you are in the Jacksonville area, and whether you are drawn to the studio or the outdoors and I will come back to you quickly with everything you need to know.

Frequently Asked Questions About Infant Photography in Jacksonville

How far in advance should I book infant photography near me in Jacksonville?

For newborn sessions, I recommend reaching out around 20 to 28 weeks pregnant to secure your date. I hold your spot with a retainer and we confirm the session timing once your baby arrives. Fall and holiday season dates fill the fastest, sometimes eight to ten weeks out.

What if my baby will not stop crying during the session?

This is completely normal and it is part of every newborn session. Feeding breaks, soothing techniques, white noise, and patience are all built into the timeline.

Can siblings be included in the infant session?

Yes, and those sibling images are often the ones parents love the most. I typically photograph sibling moments early in the session while everyone is fresh, then transition to baby-only work.

Can we do outdoor sessions in Jacksonville in the summer?

Absolutely! I typically do sessions about 1 hour before sunset. This makes for grat sunlight, and less heat from the sun.
